Uli Gaulke

Uli was born in Schwerin, came to Berlin in 1989 and studied Physics, Film and Theatre Science. On the side, he worked as a projectionist and founded his own cinema BALASZ in 1994. In 1995, he began his studies in film direction at HFF „Konrad Wolff“ in Potsdam. His graduation film HAVANNA MI AMOR opened the Berlinale Forum in 2000 and won the German Film Award LOLA as Best Documentary after its successful theatrical release in 2001.

Ever since, Uli has realized films like CASATE CONMIGO, PINK TAXI, AS TIME GOES BY IN SHANGHAI and COMRADES IN DREAMS, which was invited to compete at SUNDANCE in 2007 and was released in cinemas in more than 50 countries. Uli participated in Wim Wenders and Alain Derobe’s Masterclass at the European Film Academy on “3D Filmmaking and Storytelling” and realized the 3D music film WACKEN 3D as co-director.

Uli is currently working as a writer and director in Berlin. He has taught and been on juries internationally, for example in India, Bolivia, Japan and Russia. Since 2006, he has been a member of the German Film Academy and is working on a documentary on the retirement home in Hollywood.
